Tivoli Gardens - SS24

Tivoli is a small-town northeast of Rome in Italy and known for its gardens since the mid-1500s.

The gardens of Tivoli have inspired many, including Frenchman Simon G. Boutin’s garden in Paris. Boutin was executed in the late 1700s, which resulted in his garden and properties being seized. The garden was then opened to the public and eventually became an amusement park. Jardin de Tivoli existed in Paris in various forms until the mid-1800s.

The founder of Tivoli in Copenhagen, Georg Carstensen, had lived in Paris and was familiar with Jardin de Tivoli, its gardens, roller coaster, pantomime, maze, and fireworks. When architect H.C. Stilling designed the first gardens in Tivoli in Copenhagen, it was inspired by a mix of gardens from the Renaissance, Parisian gardens, and architecture from the Middle East and China. 

Tivoli is said to have inspired the famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen to write the story ‘The Nightingale’. Our collection Tivoli Gardens has been made by our designers with great inspiration from Tivoli and Tivoli Gardens. Some have found inspiration in the gardens of the Renaissance, others in the cheerful, colourful amusement park of the present day.
